Over the next 10-15 years, 90% of global economic growth will be outside the EU borders and by 2050, not a single EU country will belong to the world’s seven largest economies.
Together we - the EU- are the world’s largest economy and the largest common market. If we can agree on policy within the EU, we will be a very influential voice globally.
Having an influential voice means that our fundamental values are those that shine the brightest in the world. That freedom, democracy, equality, human rights and the rule of law win. That we can make the world safer and work for a world where more people grow up in safe democracies without violence and oppression.
This means that we can work to address the major challenges of our time. That we can reduce emissions so that our planet is habitable in the future. That we can create policy for fair and free trade that supports growth both in Europe and abroad.
Right now, our unity is threatened - populism has shown its ugly face again. Populists exploit the darkest and most primitive feelings in us - fear, anger and hatred. They utilize vulnerability and disappointment in politics to drive ultra-nationalist policies that reduce our influence in the world.
I am standing for the EU election because a new European leadership is needed, a leadership that stands up to populism. A leadership that believes in cooperation and an even better future and that does not spread distrust. A leadership that combats climate change and doesn’t turn a blind eye to the problem. A leadership that tirelessly works for freedom and security and that does not bow to dictators.
It is easy to get caught up in feelings of fear and uncertainty. But we must stand together - Europe’s fate cannot be left to populists.I believe that Europe’s and Finland’s best times are ahead of us, if we choose to stand on the right side of history.
That is why I stand for the EU election.
